What We Believe

"What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us." - A.W. Tozer

core beliefs

Church

The members of the First Church of Christ represent a New Testament, nondenominational church. We believe that the church is the body of Christ on earth, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and exists to save the lost and edify the saved.

  • We encourage the members of this local church body to live according to the example of Jesus Christ.
  • We regard the members of the local church body not as the only Christians, but as Christians only.  We seek oneness with all believers in matters essential to the Christian faith .
  • We invite into this fellowship of believers all who would commit themselves to the Lordship of Jesus Christ according to the terms of His will in the New Testament.

God

We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, three-in-one, the Trinity. (Matthew 28:19).

Jesus CHRIST

We believe that Jesus is the Christ, the one and only Son of God, who died for our sins and arose from the dead as the Savior of the world (1 Corinthians 14:3-4).

Bible

We believe that the Bible is the inspired and inerrant Word of God; it is God-breathed.  We believe that Scripture is the final authority in all matters of faith and practice, and the only sufficient guide for the Church and the Christian life (1 Timothy 3:16).

Salvation

We believe that every person has immeasurable worth as a creation of God, but that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).

We believe that forgiveness of sins and the promise of eternal life are available to all those who accept Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior.  We believe that salvation is through the grace of God and "not by works, so that no one can boast" (John 3:16, Ephesians 2:8-9).

We believe that the steps to salvation are as follows:

Hear the Word of God. (Romans 10:14, 1 Corinthians 15:1-4)
Believe the Word of God. (Romans 10:9, Mark 16:16)
Repent of personal sins.  (Luke 13:3, Acts 17:30)
Confess Jesus is the Son of God.  (Matthew 10:32, Matthew 16:16, Romans 10:9-10
Be immersed in Christian baptism.  (Acts 2:38, 1 Peter 3:21)
Live the Christian Life according to God's Word. (James 1:22, Romans 12:1-2)

The Lord's supper

Communion: We believe that God is the host of the Lord's Supper. Christ initiated the Lord's Supper as a remembrance of his sacrifice and grace, (Matthew 26:26-29), therefore, we offer an open communion to all who have repented, confessed, and are immersed believers in Jesus Christ (Acts 2:38).
